Did you know that Underwater Archaeological Excavation is very similar to traditional land archaeology?

The most common (and perhaps most popular) type of underwater archaeological sites studied are shipwrecks; however, marine archaeologists also investigate other kinds of sites, such as sunken airplanes, flooded land sites, or fishing structures.

Marine Mammals

Mammals, which evolved on land, made their way into water some millions of years ago to take advantage of what the sea has to offer. The term ‘marine mammals’ includes all mammals that live in either marine or freshwater environments and would be more correctly called aquatic mammals, but they are almost always found in marine environments.

- Three distinct lineages of mammals have evolved to live in water:

  • Cetacea – whales, dolphins and porpoises
  • Carnivora – seals, sea lions, walruses and sea otters
  • Sirenia – dugongs and manatees

Coral Reefs

Alien Octopus

Alien Octopus

Florida is the only state in the continental United States with extensive shallow coral reef formations near its coasts.

The world’s largest coral reef system is found off the coast of Australia.

With an area of about 133,000 square miles (roughly half the size of Texas), the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world. Located off the eastern coast of Queensland, Australia in the aptly named Coral Sea, the Great Barrier Reef is composed of almost 3,000 individual reefs. The reef is so big, it can be seen from space! The reef is both a marine park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once home to over 300 species of coral, anemones, and sponges, in addition to 1,500 species of tropical fish, the reef is under great threat from climate change. Recent reports show that the Great Barrier Reef has lost more than half its coral since 1995.
